Tokyo Juliet

Was too sleepy the other time so here’s the delayed post on a Taiwanese drama I watched recently, Tokyo Juliet. Actually I hate doing written reviews (for whatever media) because I feel that my reactions to something when I’m in the midst of reading, watching or listening to it may be completely different from what I feel at the time of writing. (I cringe whenever I had to write book/movie reviews in school.) But I thought this drama is pretty interesting to be reviewed, so haha let’s do it…And interesting here can mean a lot of things…
I must say that I watched this drama unintentionally. Not in the supposed list of dramas to watch before I start working. But having too much time on your hands actually make you surf blindly. And I was wiki-ing for fun and having watched It Started With A Kiss, I thought Ariel Lin’s acting was pretty convincing so I clicked on links to her other dramas. Chanced upon Tokyo Juliet and read the synopsis. Having seen her character in It Started With A Kiss go to such great lengths to be with someone she liked and learning that Tokyo Juliet has the female protagonist grow her hair just because a boy she met when she was a child told her her long hair was pretty like a doll’s, I just had to watch this one. How come they like to make dramas out of such nonsensical things, I thought. Then came all the interesting things.
I discovered something (or rather someone) sooo interesting but haha I shall save the best for last.
Firstly, I thought the setting is quite unique as it is an interesting blend of the school and working worlds. The fact that it is set in the world of fashion made it all the more fascinating cos I really wonder how people can design such pretty and smart clothes for other people to wear. But as I watched the serial, it dawned on me that the world of fashion which thrives on creativity and ideas may not as pretty as the clothes that are designed. Even though things may have been exaggerated since it’s a drama after all, I do believe that the working world is not one which is pure and simple. We can find happiness anywhere but watching a drama like this makes me feel that it’s not easy when you’re thrust upon the vast and uncertain world of work. People stealing your ideas and presenting them as if they were their own, it feels real. Such a vicious and cut-throat world of work we have out there, and it’s gonna be thrust upon me soon…
Besides the setting, what’s really interesting (actually more like ridiculous) is how every other episode would have a new challenger vying for the affection of both the male and female leads. It’s like playing Street Fighter hehe. Or you can say it’s like having a multi-angular love polygon with n sides, where n is the number of characters who are either falling in or out of love. I thought the current trend is the love ’square’?! This one really breaks new ground by exploring the inclusion of a love polygon. After several episodes, you’ll start thinking: Are the female and leads so great that so many people are fighting for them?
Maybe the answer is yes, cos I think I’m infatuated with Wu Chun now haha…I didn’t know he existed leh! But I think there was once Trina/Angel mentioned there was this cute guy in Hana Kimi when that drama was on Channel U. Were they talking about him? I should have just watched Hana Kimi then, but it was prolly the busy essay period or something so I didn’t watch it. Aiya how could I miss such a sweet eye-candy? I don’t actually like his image in Tokyo Juliet cos of the long hair (me hates guys with long hair), but everything else was cute haha. And every time he runs in search of his loved one, it just sets my pulse racing I don’t know why. Now I’m watching Hana Kimi and I’m just so in love with his athletic get-up in the show. Sportsmen rule!
Ok my supposed review of Tokyo Juliet has turned into a gushing session haha. So, if I were to go back to the review, I’d say watch it for the actors and the evil working world setting. Actually Wu Chun’s acting wasn’t that fantastic in Tokyo Juliet (maybe cos it was his first full debut?) and his character was a bit OTT, but haha just concentrate on him and not his character can oredi…

I’m from Malaysia too. I suggested you watched ” Love Contract”. It is extremely good, rather very unlike other trendy- cutie-cutie wahtsoever drama.
Or I want to watch really something that fulfilling my soul. Not mere enjoyment.
When i want to really appreciated a good drama i will not looking at the hot actor but by his acting. For example i don’t like Mike in WWL and Bull Fighting not because of him, but because of the character is the same. Because i want to see a real actor in him. Then I turn to Love Contract, i want to see him out of the stereotype character, out of the rich line, cool then I got what I yearn for. He in Love contract very different, I loved it. Not rich, has some talent with drawing he pull out his talent here.
Same goes with Ariel, she is great actress, but her character in Iswak and TKA is so lame. A naive character is also a character. But, it has to have a development that is more important part in a excellent drama. But when i watched Love Contract. There you are a new wave. I love it. I loved her and her acting in this.
They have excellent chemestiry, rather very strong than other character their play. As some people says, in others drama both Mike and Ariel has look good together. This drama their love seems so real, tender and everlasting. Believe. But we have to spare some for the ending. It quite different.
For me after Mars, and oddly enjoyed Metoer Garden 2 ( as a starting point of Taiwnese drama ) Love Contract is a classic one. It will make your heart flutter, memorable scenes, very indeed subtle, deep, intense, natural way falling in love.
Not like other so much up to the sky love – man chasing his girl- fight whatsoever that is not realistic.
This drama is realistic- blend with some myth- very much deep and eternal love.
LOVED IT SO MUCH.:)
Hi, anyway I’m from across the causeway
Yes, I agree that the acting is important, but well, since idol dramas are mostly light-hearted by nature and feature the cutie-cutie actors, I usually watch idol dramas for some sort of release from the everyday life. You can say it’s a form of escapism, for me to forget about the everyday stress and such. So, sometimes the looks of the actor/actresses trump their acting in making me satisfied after watching the drama. However, I don’t just watch idol dramas. There a lot of heartwarming or dramas with those deeper meanings out there that leave me in deep thought weeks after watching them so yep it depends on your motives for watching the dramas, really.
It’s just that Wu Chun is the epitome of almost everything that’s good about men so that explains why I was swooning over his looks while watching Tokyo Juliet haha.
I just started watching Tokyo Juliet yesterday and it really is an addictive show. And I agree with ariel acting in ISWAK and TKA to be annoying sometimes but i truly love her! She’s my favorite asian actress ^^ And wu chen really does look hot in hana kimi *drools* He’s still hawt in Tokyo Juliet mind you… I’m just itching to watch all the episodes for that drama… am currently on episode 6 (I get side track EASILY -_-) lol….
And in Love Contract… It was sooo awesome! It really shows true love and how it can make people change. I got real mad with people constantly posting comments saying how they rather ariel and joe cheng… and mike he and Rinie(i think that’s her name… from in Devil beside you… which is also an amazing drama) But the whole mysteries and just yearning to learn more in Love Contract will have your eyes glue to the drama. It was the first time I appreciated Ariel for her acting skills cuz she was just brilliant… especially with having to bottle up all her troubles only until Mike came to heal her. This is one drama that you ABSOLUTELY need tissues for! Especially in the last 3 episodes i think… I was crying sooo much xD lol And i’m not one to cry so easily just cuz of a show. *sigh* The ending was really confusing but i love to wiki and it gave u a really good understanding on that.
Well… off to watch more Tokyo Juliet…
Bubbles ^_~
Hi there!!!
I’m currently watching Tokyo Juliet and i’m on the 11th episode…
i love the couple they were both cute. There are just these lots of twists rather obstacles that they need to surpass which they will encounter lots of people that would test their relationship as well as their abilities as a designer. Though i haven’t finished it yet i could say that i like the story somehow. For me the drama just tells us how that two people fight not only for their love but also their goals which helps them to become a strong person and an achiever. LOVE won’t never be a hindrance for people who wants to reach their goals in life instead it will help you to love life much even better because you’re facing the challenges not alone but together with your love one that would never ever leave at your side…
